Oh where shall we live IF we move to the Bay
A little ranch house in San Jose?
My old hippie cousin Kathleen says
There’s only one place, and that’s Point Reyes.
But I hope a house would be within reach,
And not an RV on Stinson Beach.
I’d rather not live in a tiny roomette,
A fourth-floor walkup in the Inner Sunset
Or Burlingame, and Will we be seen as
Lower-class if we live in Martinez?
Well, we’ll do our best, and time will well.
Here’s a one-bedroom in San Rafael,
We know we can’t make a big mortgage payment,
Expensive wines and bright shining raiment,
The fabulous lives of the well-to-do
In Palo Alto or Mountain View,
But maybe someday you’ll design a new App
For an iPhone that shows you a live local map
A map with a clear, well designed graphic
That shows you how to avoid heavy traffic,
The money will roll in, and two lifelong renters
Will find themselves new one-percenters,
And we will rejoice and thank God
And find some lovely tax shelters abroad,
And a house on the hill above the bright lights,
A big stucco mansion in Pacific Heights,
And we will pay millions, 31 and a half,
And sit on our red tile terrace and laugh.
Everyone hoping that we’ll trip and fall,
Go bankrupt, run headfirst into a wall,
And there we will sit, we happy bourgeois,
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
The happiest couple that you ever saw.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
