The first time that I met you was in a small cafe.
So stunned by your elegance, I didn’t know what to say.
Our second date was at Tanglewood and I’m not sure what we heard
It could’ve been Beethoven’s Sixth or his Twenty-Third
At the intermission we strolled among the crowd
And suddenly I realized my shirt was way too loud
I was half in love and had a lady on my arm
But me, you could see, I was right off the farm.
I was just another redneck in love with a lady
Far above his station, which made him afraid he
Couldn’t keep her attention on account of her position.
Lady, won’t you take me home tonight?
She asked me in the car, “Did you like that symphony?”
And I said, “Yes. Of course. It was all right by me.”
I mean what could I say? Could I say, No? I don’t know how a
Redneck like me should judge Seiji Ozawa.
We didn’t say much, driving back, but we did hold hands
And I thought, Hold on, boy, this is a doomed romance.
You could smell old beer cans from the backseat of the car
And when she turned on the radio it wasn’t NPR.
I was just another cowboy in love with Katherine Hepburn
Who was from another universe, no way he could’ve kept her
Couldn’t get her off his mind but you don’t mix beer and wine
Lady, won’t you take me home tonight?
And now it’s eight years later, and that lady and me—
Or rather, lady and I, we’re living happily.
She chooses the music, the cuisine, the decor.
She asks me if I like it and I say, Yes, of course.
We have a little daughter who’s a peach and almost three
When I go to the grocery store she likes to ride with me
And I play her George Jones and Merle Haggard and Emmylou
I swear she knows half the words to “Cheatin Heart” and “Lovesick Blues.”
I’m just another redneck in love with the duchess
Love is an enchantment, it changes everything it touches
Love takes you places you would never go alone
Lady, how about we stay home.
