Dear Garrison,
I could never have imagined the surprising circumstances you and I’ve been in for the past few months. But here we are, and I’m hoping this personal appeal can help to move us forward.
More than two months ago, we both agreed we want the online archives of A Prairie Home Companion and The Writer’s Almanac available to the public. As you know, MPR has offered to pay you for your rights to these materials and, with your permission, MPR can restore public access in a matter of days. Of course there are important details, and the lawyers are working on a settlement of the outstanding issues, but it’s taking a long time and seems to have gotten complicated. Whatever issues remain, I want to get them settled as soon as possible.
MPR wants fans of A Prairie Home Companion and The Writer’s Almanac to have free access to the thousands of wonderful performers and artists, musicians and poets whose work is included in those archives, and we want your fans to have free access to the decades of terrific material you created. If you would rather not have MPR restore public access to the online archives, just say so and we will deliver those archives to you so you can work with whomever you prefer.
You are singularly talented, and you’ve been generous to MPR and to me in countless ways. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to know you and work with you. I trust neither of us wants more pain for anyone involved in this, and I hope we can settle our disputes very soon.
Jon McTaggart
