I always wanted to sing in the opera
And sing of passion, sing of rage
To fall in love with inappropriate women,
Fight a senseless duel and die on stage.
That’s what opera is all about, really
To embrace your fate and go all the way
To show your colors and be true to your school
To be trés okay like Georges Bizet.
Well, Georges Bizet was born in St. Paul
His name was Duane — he was in 4-H
He got a blue ribbon for building a shed
But he always dreamed of a life on the stage
He grew up Lutheran
Polite and modest, the real Midwest
But Duane said, “No!
There’s something French in me
That needs to be expressed.”
He looked kind of strange in Minnesota
In a black beret
But he ate French fries
And he drank his Kool-Aid with Courvosier
Well, if you’re shy and from the Midwest
And grow up Lutheran, it’s always Lent
He wanted music, laughter and music
But guilt was his mother’s favorite instrument
She poured him a cup of bitter, black coffee
She said, “Duane, it’ll break our hearts if you leave.”
He said, “Mama, I love you but,
My jene se poir is soir la fevre.”
He went to Paris with Karen Larson
She changed her name to Carmen LeToile
He wrote her this opera and they got married
And they never went back to St. Paul
What a passionate couple
That rose in her teeth is fresh every day
So remember, mon cher
That even if you’re shy
You can still laugh
And you can sing—
Especially if you go away to someplace where people don’t know you and aren’t watching you so closely. And you can wear cool clothes without people saying, “Well, who does he think he is?” And hang out with whoever you like and even change your name.
As did my fellow Minnesotan, Duane Bizet.
