There’s a city in Wisconsin that I first saw as a child
On a car trip with our family one July
The highway sign said Madison Next Right, 3/4 mile
It was almost dark and we began to sigh,
“Daddy, can we spend the night in Madison, Wisconsin?
We’re tired, and it isn’t far away.”
The highway sign went past at sixty miles an hour
‘Cause Daddy had a ways to go that day.
Well, Daddy was a driver, and he had a daily quota
Of eight, nine hundred miles he should drive
And sometimes he would drive straight through to home in Minnesota
‘Cause he figured we could stop when we arrived
Museums, reptile gardens, we kids would make a racket
But Dad just put his foot down on the gas
“Daddy, can’t we stop at this historic roadside plaque?
At least slow down and we will try to read it fast.”
“Daddy, can we spend the night in Madison, Wisconsin?
There’s a motel up ahead that has tame deer.”
The motel sign went past at sixty miles an hour
And Madison was in our rear-view mirror
As we passed the city by I dreamed of life in Madison
And thought it must be lovely for a kid
Where dads are easy-going and relaxed and if they had a son
They wouldn’t drive him hard like my dad did
Now, I think of Madison as a calm oasis
Where people do not strive to reach the top
And a person doesn’t worry if he isn’t going places
A town where people have the brains to stop
Let us stop and spend our lives in Madison, Wisconsin
In a home with maple trees and a picket fence
Let us put the car on blocks and take the kids and go for walks
In Madison, where stopping just makes sense
