I got the church supper blues and I don’t know what to do
We had fish at St. John’s and St. Luke’s barbecue
The Methodists have chicken and ham,
And beans, yes, thank you, ma’am,
And afterward it’s the Catholics’ booya stew.
We troop in the front, take a number, and take a seat
Til they call us to come to the fellowship hall and eat,
Get your raffle tickets by the door
For the outboard motor and the 4×4
Sit down to a plate of potatoes and a slab of meat
I’ve got lots of relatives so I have to go
To every darn supper there is for two months or so,
Grip and grin, smile and shake,
Have a homemade roll, a piece of cake
We got Zion Lutheran next and then St. Joe.
When someone dies, we lay them down to rest
And then sit down at the table and loosen our vest
Cole slaw, potato salad, wieners and beans
And eat some appetizers in between
And a gallon of coffee to help it all digest.
I got the church supper blues and I get it every spring
I used to be a string bean and now I’m a buffalo wing
Lord forgive me for my sins
And this spare tire and these extra chins
I get so stuffed I can hardly hold a hymnal and sing
Gloria Dei’s meatballs I can’t refuse
And that’s why I look down and can’t see my shoes
Beef and chicken and slabs of salmon
Lord I’m praying for a little more famine
Meanwhile pass me those caramel rolls
These are the times that try men’s souls
Lord how I’ve got these old church supper blues
