Way back in our student days
Hanging out in cheap cafés
Pretending we were Hemingways in exile in Montmartre
The books we’d write that would never sell
And the best revenge in living well
And the only way to live is from the heart.
Two idealists, me and you,
English majors at the U
And last night I ran into you by surprise
You looked prosperous and fine
Drunk on expensive wine
And I could see the sorrow in your eyes
The day is short
The night so long
Why do you work so hard to get
What you don’t even want?
We chase that old goddess, give it everything we have
Give up half our lives until we’ve won
And one night wake up and sit on the edge of the bed
And the fever is passed and you think “What have I done?”
The man in the brown suit kisses the kids goodbye
“Daddy’s going on a trip honey, don’t you cry.”
And the man is gone for a week then home for a day.
Pretty soon they don’t cry anymore when he goes away.
Go to the mall and go from store to store
Everybody killing time until death walks through the door
Then you look around at your home full of merchandise
And you realize you’ve paid too high a price.
